For the reason that if you get lost you will be able to survive for over what you intended. Another item that is really useful to bring is something to start a fire with, such as water proof matches, all weather lighter, or flint and steal. A pocket knife or utility knife would be another great tool to have. One last thing you really could use would be a compass, if you get lost (unless you’re an expert) it will be kind of hard to find south east.

Hiking Store-Meals

The Hiking Store is here to help plan your trips. When I plan for all the meals on our camping or hiking trips I try to watch calories as each person might need more than 2000 calories per day. Along with our meals, I make sure to include some snacks to boost our energy. As for our water, a good rule of thumb is 8oz. of water per 10lbs. of body weight per person per day.

You can adjust these amounts up for hiking or camping in extreme conditions. This might sound like a lot, but speaking from experience, our family rarely needs to pack out anything but the trash. Planning to carry extra meals and snacks for at least a few days longer than your planned trip will give you a buffer if you get lost or injured.

Also remember to have something to start a fire (water proof matches, all weather lighter, or flint and steel), a good knife, and one last thing…a good compass. Make sure all your equipment is in good order and you know how to use it. Have an awesome time.

I thought you would be interested in this E-book called “The Beginner's Guide To Getting You Started With Comfortable Tent Camping In 12 Easy Affordable Steps” It has tips on:
* How to create a check list that fits your exact needs in 5 easy steps
* How to choose the right items for your trip for the best price
* What foods to bring
And much more.
Check back again, as I will have more hiking and wilderness survival tips for you.
